Who is YHWH?

Hear, O Israel: YHWH is our Elohim, YHWH is one (Deuteronomy 6:4 )

This study is concerning the Most High Elohim, his name is YHWH. It is important that we understand who he is and how we are expected to relate to him.

Revelation 4:11 “You are worthy, O YHWH, to receive esteem and respect and power, for You have created all, and because of Your desire they are, and were created.”

YHWH is the creator of all things. We must believe that this is truth! We must believe that YHWH is an active part of our life...

Isaiah 55:6-9
6 Seek ye YHWH while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto YHWH, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our Elohim, for he will abundantly pardon.
8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," saith YHWH.
9 "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."

Concerning the Name of YHWH being an everlasting name...

Psalm 135:13 Thy name, O YHWH, endureth for ever; and thy memorial, O YHWH, throughout all generations.

YHWH's name is forever; his name is closely related to his righteousness...

Isaiah 45:24 Surely, shall one say, only in YHWH have I righteousness and strength: even to him shall men come; and all that are displeased with him shall be ashamed. 25 In YHWH all the seed of Israel shall be declared right and boast.

Revelation 11:18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

We are assured that if we call upon YHWH (His Name), that he will hear us...

Jeremiah 33:1-3
1 Moreover the word of
YHWH came unto Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, saying,
2 "Thus saith YHWH the maker thereof, YHWH that formed it, to establish it; YHWH is his name; 3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not."

Finding out who YHWH is...

Exodus 3:13-15
13 And Moses said unto Elohim, "Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, 'The Elohim of your fathers hath sent me unto you," and they shall say to me, 'What is his name?' what shall I say unto them?"
14 And Elohim said unto Moses," I AM THAT I AM." And he said, "Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, 'I AM hath sent me unto you.'"
15 And Elohim said moreover unto Moses, "Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, 'YHWH Elohim of your fathers, the Elohim of Abraham, the Elohim of Isaac, and the Elohim of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.'"

Some believe that Exodus 6:2-3 was the first revelation of His Name...

Exodus 6:2 And Elohim spake unto Moses, and said unto him, "I am YHWH. 3 And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of El-Shaddai, but by my name YHWH was I not known to them?"

King James has that quote without a question mark, making it seem like it is a statement; that by the name of YHWH, Abraham did not know Him. The NKJV goes so far as to say that Abraham did not know him by the name of YHWH. But, let's look at the facts: Abraham hears/says YHWH in Genesis 15:2, 15:7, 15:8, 18:14 and Genesis 22:14. So Abraham did call on the name of YHWH.

Now for some other aspects of our Heavenly Father...

Isaiah 44:6 Thus saith YHWH the King of Israel, and his redeemer YHWH of hosts, "I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no Elohim."

YHWH is the first and the last, and YHWH is our protector. We do need to learn to trust Him!...

Psalm 27:1-14
1 YHWH is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? YHWH is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.
3 Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.
4 One thing have I desired of YHWH, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of YHWH all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of YHWH, and to inquire in his temple.
5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
6 And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle offerings of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto YHWH
.
7 Hear, O YHWH, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me.
8 To my heart You have said, “Seek My face.” Your face, YHWH, I seek.
9 Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O Elohim of my salvation.
10 When my father and my mother forsake me, then YHWH will take me up.
11 Teach me thy way, O YHWH, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.
12 Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty.
13 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of YHWH in the land of the living.
14 Wait on YHWH: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on YHWH."

And again...

Psalm 18:1 I will love thee, O YHWH, my strength. 2 YHWH is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my El, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. 3 I will call upon YHWH, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

We are to trust through the knowledge of His Name...

Psalm 9:7 But YHWH shall endure for ever: he hath prepared his throne for judgment. 8 And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness. 9 YHWH also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. 10 And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, YHWH, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

We are commanded to sing praises to YHWH...

Psalm 68:4 Sing unto Elohim, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name YAH, and rejoice before him.

We are YHWH's witnesses...

Isaiah 43:1 But now thus saith YHWH that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, "Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine."

Isaiah 43:9-12
9 "Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled: who among them can declare this, and shew us former things? let them bring forth their witnesses, that they may be justified: or let them hear, and say, "It is truth."
10 "Ye are my witnesses," saith YHWH, "And my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no El formed, neither shall there be after me.
11 "I, even I, am YHWH; and beside me there is no saviour.
12 "I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no stranger (no strange elohim) among you: therefore ye are my witnesses," saith YHWH, "that I am El."

YHWH is awesome! We must be humble. Hannah (the mother of prophet Samuel) gives testimony to this truth...

1Samuel 2:1-3
1 And Hannah prayed, and said, "My heart rejoiceth in YHWH, mine horn is exalted in YHWH: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation.
2 "There is no one kadosh like YHWH: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our Elohim.
3 "Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for YHWH is an El of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed."

EliYahu the prophet confronts the false prophets of Baal...

1 Kings 18:21 And EliYah came unto all the people, and said, "How long would you keep hopping between two opinions? if YHWH be Elohim, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him." And the people answered him not a word.

And it is a fact that baal means "lord"!

We are saved through his Name!...

Joel 2:32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of YHWH shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as YHWH hath said, and in the remnant whom YHWH shall call.

This verse is quoted in Acts 2:21

Acts 2:21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of YHWH shall be saved.

There are (and have been) prophets that speak lies in the name of YHWH. This has the same effect as replacing His Name for Baal...

Jeremiah 23:25-27
25 I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, "I have dreamed, I have dreamed."
26 How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart;
27 Which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal.

We are admonished to seek YHWH before it is too late! Let us read it again...

Isaiah 55:6-9
6 Seek ye YHWH while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto YHWH; and he will have mercy upon him; and to our Elohim, for he will abundantly pardon.
8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," saith YHWH
.
9 "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."

In closing, YHWH gives us a command...

Jeremiah 9:23-24 Thus saith YHWH, "Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches: 24 But let him that boasts boast in this; that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am YHWH which exercise loving kindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight," saith YHWH.
